Jacob’s Trio

Posted by Big Boo on August 13th, 2007

Jacob’s TrioTRRRIIIIIIIII-O! TRRRIIIIIIII-O! I want a Trio and I want one now!

So went the TV advertising campaign for Jacob’s Trio, a chocolate biscuit bar which was still available until fairly recently, when it suddenly disappeared from our supermarket shelves. The Trio got it’s name from it’s three constituent parts, a shortcake biscuit, thick solid toffee flavour creme and a thick coating of chocolate. To add futher to the three theme, each bar was split into three bite-sized chunks. It came wrapped gold foiled paper, with a bright red paper label with “Trio” emblazoned on it in big white letters. I’ve searched high and low for a picture, but to no avail, so you’ll have to make do with my artists impression!

What made Trio so popular originally was the advert. Repeated up and down the UK in school playgrounds, kids would love shouting TRRRIIIIIIIII-O at the top of their voices. It went something like this:-

TRRRIIIIIIIII-O! TRRRIIIIIIIII-O!

I want a Trio and I want one now!

Not one, not two, but three things in it.

Chocolate, a biscuit and a toffee taste too.

Trio was also available in a chocolate variety, which replaced the toffee for a kind of thick chocolate creme, something like you’d get in a Bourbon biscuit. The wrapper was blue for these, if memory serves. Finding either variety in your packed lunch was always a happy moment, and probably caused an outburst of the jingle from your mates, who would promptly try and pinch it from you.

Never mind Trios, for catchy TV theme tuns you want Um-bongo! (Um bongo, um bongo they drink it in the Congo…)

    Hey,
please encourage people to join our group to bring back the Trio . . .

I have used your picture so if I’m breaking any copyrights or anything like that please let me know and I will remove it!!

  6. Big Boo Says:

Hi Deak. Bringing back the Trio sounds like a good idea to me, so you have my support, and feel free to use the image – it’s probably not completely right but it’s how I remember the wrapper looking.

I have a scan of the inside and outside of an individual toffy trio bar unwrapped at this site- http://s642.photobucket.com/albums/uu150/trevorloughlin/?firstLogin=true

I don’t know if this link will work or how to directly link the pictures, but feel free to copy them and do it yourself on this site. I agree that the Toffy Trio should be brought back.

  8. Big Boo Says:

Many thanks for that Trevor. The link appears to work fine!

I had forgotten about the little puzzles they had on the inside of the wrappers until I saw your photo. I seem to recall at one point you could rub them with the edge of a silver coin to reveal the answers.

And how many people have nicked your trio drawing for their site ?

  12. Big Boo Says:

For an image that took me about 5 minutes to draw it’s not done too bad for itself, has it?

Thanks for the multipack pic! Here’s more on Mr. Rat.

I *personally* miss Trios; I liked both the Toffy ones (in red wrapping) and the Double Choc ones (in dark blue wrapping).

  14. Chris Says:

I have a Trio Suzy doll(from the advert). they were made for promotional purposes and I don’t think they were on general sale. Any offers?

  15. CLIVE Says:

    Hi Chris,
I’ve got one as well. I used to do design and marketing work for Jacobs. The doll came in for a photographic session about 20 years ago…and got kidnapped! Have you been offered a price yet?

  16. Chris Says:

I haven’t advertised the Suzy Doll but would be interested in it’s value.
Mine is unopened, still in the plastic bag and it is from the 1980s.
None are advertised anywhere so it’s likely to have a high collectible value.

Anyone wishing to make an offer please contact me:
