Well, possibly Jeanette. Certainly the normal Lego pieces are the same size as they always have been. My old Lego bricks from my childhood still work with bricks bought today.

However, there are a great many more Lego piece types available today than when we were kids, so it is possible she has a lot of different size pieces to those you remember, and this might be the cause of the confusion?

As a little one in the mighty eighties I have to say the town was my number one and then castle system with all those great set pieces and horses. My friends next door had lots of the space systems, so they often visited my home and our' town system' folks with their space set ships, causing great excitement in my rather large town. Lots of lego police and helicopters from the yllow airport would always arrive to handle massive crowd control. Darn lego townsfolk. I had a lot of sets as my dad worked for SAS airlines and brought a lot of hard to find European sets back even trains but the voltage need the 220/120V connections etc.
