[...] Douglas Adams went on to convert the story into a “trilogy” of novels. The second book was entitled The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and the third Life, the Universe, and Everything. However, the trilogy has since been expanded into a quintology, with So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish in 1984, and Mostly Harmless in 1992. The latter title is in reference to the updated description of Earth in the guide, and will be recognisable as one of the rankings in the videogame Elite.
Sadly I never played it enough on any incarnation (I had it on Commodore 64 and Amiga) to get to the missions.

On the latter I always found myself caught in witchspace by the Thargoids after I started making a decent profit, and I could never work out how to get past that.

I'm assuming you managed to make it to Elite Mark? If so, well done! I tip my hat to you!

It's a shame you didn't get to Competent. After 256 kills you trigger the first mission, to hunt down a stolen Constrictor class vessel. Later, somewhere between Deadly and Elite, you embark upon the Thargoid Documents mission, trying to get secret plans to a specific star system while the Thargoids hunt you down.

This was all on the disk version of Elite on the BBC Micro. Later ports of Elite added extra missions by the bucket load.
