Walls Funny Feet

Posted by Big Boo on September 1st, 2008

Funny FeetThere was a time somewhere around the early 1980’s when the technology that was used for making ice creams and ice lollies must have suddenly seen an improvement, as the market started to see a number of new styles of frozen sweets appear. Prior to this most ice lollies were just frozen juice on a stick, with a roughly rectangular shape. Of course there were exceptions, such as Rocket Lollies or Strawberry Mivvis, but that was about it.

One of the first of the new breed of ice creams to appear was Walls Funny Feet. This was a lump of pink coloured, strawberry flavoured ice cream on a stick, moulded into the shape of a comical looking foot with a slightly oversized big toe, if I remember correctly. Over the years some changes were made to the design, including making them out of a rippled flavour of ice cream, but I don’t think they are available any more.

The problem with Funny Feet was that the ice cream they were made of had a habit of melting fairly quickly, and becoming a little too soft. This meant the entire thing would start to bend when you put it in your mouth, and lumps could drop off very easily. I remember my sister was a big fan of Funny Feet but she didn’t eat them very fast, so quite often you’d see here with pink trails of melted ice cream running down the back of her hand.

The soft ice cream problem also caused issues with the storage of them. If the shops freezer wasn’t kept cold enough, for instance because someone left the sliding lid open too long when choosing an ice cream, it was usually the Funny Feet that were first to suffer. Often you would pull off the wrapper to discover your foot had looked like it had been in some kind of horrific accident, with the toes all mushed together or a massive dent in the side instead of the intended smooth curve.

where can you get them or do they still have them now

I have a feeling you can get something very similar, made with a swirly combination of two different flavours of ice cream, though I haven’t seen them recently so maybe not.

I suggest a trip to Iceland (the store, not the country) as being the best bet.

i used to love funny feet and i think they were a direct descendant of the walls funny faces icecreams of the 1960’s (which i have a feeling were still going in the 80’s). funny feet were altered slightly and are still available but with a chocolate big toe! lol

I vaguely recall one face shaped ice cream, which I think was a clown with a bubble gum ball for a nose. I suspect that’s something different to what you’re thinking of Alan.

Funny Feet were lovely (so were Funny Faces). And Strawberry Mivies! What about Cider lollies? But I have fonder memories of three earlier lollies, each with it’s own novely gimmick:
1.Batman lollies from our local ice-cream man. Lollies were boring enough, but the sticks were plastic with little Batman characters on them.
2.Hulk lollies, with collectible cards inside. The cards were sealed in plastic so they wouldn’t go soggy.
3.My favourites, although I can’t remember the name! They were horror lollies with black, red and green wrappers. Each wrapper had a section that was plain green or red when on the lolly (and therefore cold), but revealed a scary face (usually Dracula, Frankenstein or the Wolfman) when taken off and warmed up.

Anyone know what I’m on about?

The only vaguely scary ice lolly I remember were the red ice ones shaped like Dracula. Good call on the Cider Lollies too. I’d forgotten about those!

i loved the incredible hulk ice cream from the late 1970s and early 1980s that use to have a card inside the wrapper just the thrill of finding the card and looking at the pic!!!!!!!

does anyone know what flavour it was?

laura how do you mean about the cards being sealed in plastic?

does anyone have a pic of the ice cream wrapper and how the card was attached inside?

  9. Big Boo Says:

Interesting. I dare say they are still made by Wall’s (or at least a related company) in Ibiza, so it makes you wonder why they aren’t available here.

  10. WALSHY Says:

[...] My sister would get The Beano (she was born first, so she got to choose), and a Twister or maybe a Funny Feet ice cream and I would get The Dandy and a Secret chocolate bar. I bought a few of those, and some [...]

Asda are selling their own brand of ice lollies which are almost indentical to Funny Feet :D

  14. Big Boo Says:

Damn you Asda, why won’t you open a store a bit nearer to me. I’m in the middle of an Asda Bermuda Triangle, with the three closest stores all being around 30 minutes drive away, which is just that little bit too far when it comes to grocery shopping.

I have no idea! To be honest, I don’t remember much about the advert other than the song that went with. F-f-funny feet… F-from Wall’s Ice Cream…
