Could never get the hang of Scaletrix or other similar racing car things.

Much prefered a Hornby railway. Trains are better than cars

I remember the TCR sets too, and I have to agree with you Mark. I too thought that these were a superior toy. The cars may have been smaller but the ability the change lanes made it far more exciting. I seem to recall there were some sets that also had loop the loops and vertical sections of track.

I did actually get a TCR like set, called Power Passers, for Christmas one year, and spent many happy hours racing the cars around. The only problem with it was assembling the track was a bit hard as the plastic sections that clicked it together were easily broken.

Must do a post on TCR at some point!

While I did have a Scalextric set, I was more of a Total Control Racing person. At the time it had the edge over Scalextric, with its overtaking and car headlights. But it's good to see Scalextric going strong after all these years, even when faced with tough competition from driving video games. I checked out a video of Scalextric Digital on YouTube and it does seem rather impressive. Now I just need to have kids as an excuse to indulge myself and buy a set!
