I've always enjoyed those games too, even on today's PCs they can be a surprising amount of fun. Running a little '@' symbol around a maze built from '#' symbols and shooting full stops at ampersand monsters whilst collecting '$' signs is surprisingly entertaining!

One of the very first ZX81 games I remember playing with my newly-acquired 16K RAM pack was The Princess of Kraal. It was a dungeon crawler that in many ways served as a precursor to the likes of Nethack.
