Burton’s Fish and Chips

Posted by Big Boo on June 1st, 2009

burtons fish and chipsSince all the images I could find for Burton’s Fish and Chips were tiny photos of the more recent packing, I thought it was time to break out the old art package and knock up another of my terrible illustrations.

Burton’s Fish and Chips were little biscuits which were, unsurprisingly enough, shaped like little fish and rather stunted looking chips.  They were sold in packets the same size as your average packet of crisps, although not many shops seemed to stock them.  I always remember we had to go to Superdrug of all places to buy them.  I remember the packs as being decorated with a newspaper motif, despite the fact our local chippy had ditched newspaper wrapping years earlier.

They were obviously supposed to be fish and chip flavoured, although this basically amounted to a beigey brown coloured dusty covering which tasted very nice, but not really very fishy or chippy.  After eating a packet your fingers were usually coated with specks of the flavouring, so you got to enjoy licking your fingers too.

I seem to recall that Burton’s also made a sister product entitled Chicken and Chips.  As you may have already guessed, in these the fish shaped biscuits were replaced with ones shaped like chicken drumsticks, and the flavouring now tasted unlike chicken instead of unlike fish.

Another great snack from the eighties which, I’m presuming, is no longer with us, as I haven’t seen them in shops (not even Superdrug) for ages.

I used to love these as a kid, I seem to remember the taste being a subtle salt and vinegar (not violent like normal crisps).

Can’t say I ever had the chicken and chips.

I’m sure my little one had a packet of these not that long ago, albeit, possibly under a different name….

  2. Big Boo Says:

I believe you may be right about the flavour being a less potent salt and vinegar. I think the chicken ones were a bit like chicken crisps, unsurprisingly.

  3. equinoxx Says:

I don’t think the chicken flavour were shaped like drumsticks. They were shaped like chickens themselves weren’t they?

  4. Big Boo Says:

Hmm, equinoxx may well be right about this. I remember them existing, but I preferred the Fish and Chips so didn’t have them all that often.

  5. Mr Pants Says:

    Hi,

The Chicken and Chips had chicken shapes definitely.

No-one has mentioned the Burger and Chips, I kid you not.

Who remembers hedgehog flavoured crisps, and who made them?

Red Mill Foods still make Quarterbacks….

  6. Big Boo Says:

No, I don’t remember the Burger and Chips, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

I do remember Hedgehog Crisps though. They were made by a guy called Philip Lewis, but I don’t know what the company name was.

  7. Cathy Says:

Wow I loved these, Fish and Chips were the best but the Chicken and Burger ones were good too, remember my Grandma giving me money to buy them every day on the way to school. My boyfriend has been insisting that Hedgehog crisps existed but I thought he was winding me up till now.

  8. Big Boo Says:

I hope you didn’t have a bet riding on the existence of hedgehog crisps Cathy!

I so loved Fish & Chips, its seems Burtons stopped making them in the 90’s and closed the factories due to decline in the demand and they only seem to manufacture biscuits now which is very sad, maybe someone like Walkers could by the rights and may reintroduce them, I will write a letter to them who knows ?…

I loved these so much and has brought back great memories at my nannas house. The crisps I liked best from that little corner shop was Piglets. They were a hollow crips the shape of little piglets with a bacon flavouring, tghey were ace crisp (BRING ‘EM BACK), i do miss them.

  11. Craig Says:

I just wracked my brain and reread my comment, they were not bacon flavour they were bean flavour, but tasted like something from another world, theeeee best crisps of allll times. :)

  12. Big Boo Says:

Oh yes! Piglets were awesome! You got loads in a little packet for only about 10 pence, and they were really tasty. I think they may even have been Bacon & Bean flavour actually. I’m sure there were other flavours too.

Thanks for reminding me of these Craig. I’d forgotten all about them!

  13. pam Says:

the chicken fingers i remember from school were just finger shaped, not chicken or chip shaped. They were AMAZING. That was in 1976. I wish i could buy them from somewhere today.

  14. Simon Says:

I remember Chicken n Chips, Fish n Chips, and Burger n Chips i always use to buy a packet each break time at school. But does anyone know if they are still available to buy in the shops or have the ceased making them? Ohh how i miss the 80’s lol

  15. pam Says:

Can you tell me if the chicken fingers I used to buy at school are available anywhere today. Ive never heard of chicken and chips just chicken fingers shaped like a finger, They were beaut.Mmmmmmmmmm

  16. Big Boo Says:

I very much doubt they are still available Pam. We had a far better range of interesting crisps and snacks when we were kids I feel.

The crisp market these days seems to exist by charging you more money for fewer crisps just by renaming Beef flavour as British Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding flavour…

  17. Fletch Says:

I remember these but don’t ever recall eating them. Maybe I was too busy eating packet after packet of the ORIGINAL cheese and onion Ringo’s (green packet). Not like any cheese and onion tasting crisp before or since and I absolutely loved them

  18. dez Says:

Seem to remember them coming back in the early 2000’s, about 2003 ish.

Must have been a limited run, they never stuck in the mind.

  19. Temp Says:

I loved fish & chips and chicken & chips, they were the best! Also I loved the tomato flavoured Jaws crisps and the little packets of spicy flavoured Bobs! potato puffs in beef and piglets were favourites too. It seems all the interesting crisps and snacks have disappeared & now we have Walkers everywhere! :(

  20. Big Boo Says:

Thanks for reminding me about Piglets – I keep meaning to write something about them and it keeps slipping my mind. I’ll write that down…

I’m in agreement with you regarding Walkers though. The crisp market is pretty boring these days, and expensive for what you get in a packet.

What do you think? Have your say!
