Here’s a little bit of a poser for you. Â Remember this TV advert from the early 1980’s? Â A van is leaving a building site. Â Inside the front seat passenger starts to sing:
His mates in the back of the van, a scary looking bunch it has to be said, then start to join in:
Fried Onion Rings?
You’ll have to wait and see.
Hope it’s chips, it’s chips. Â We hope it’s chips, it’s chips.
I’m sure you must recognise the advert by now, but do you remember what it was advertising?
Nope, it wasn’t chips, though you’d be forgiven for thinking it was. Â This advert was actually for beefburgers, specifically Bird’s Eye Steakhouse Grills, a bigger thicker burger which you “cooked liked a steak and served like a steak”. Â OK, they were quite nice as I recall, but they certainly didn’t taste like a steak, being made of minced beef instead of a thick slice of cow.
Need some reminding. Â Alright, here’s the ad for your viewing pleasure. Â And if you don’t remember that one, what about the other similar one with all the school kids lining up to have the school photo taken?

Was it not for Birds-eye’s Steakhouse Grills? The song was about what was going to accompany it when they got home
Now I’ve read the article – you already knew, didn’t you?
I now have to find something else I know the answer to
Yeah, it was a kind of rhetorical question, but well done for knowing the answer – most people think it is for oven chips.
Apparently it’s “salad” or frozen peas, not “carrots”. None of them match up to chips, mind.
Thanks for the correction, and yes, chips rule!
What will it be for tea tonight, hope it’s beef burgers (preferably) two. Birds eye beef burgers, they’ve got the taste, nothing else will do.
We hope it’s chips, it’s chips, we hope it’s chips it’s chips…
I was in the advert with the school kids! It was filmed at St Thomas of Canterbury School in Mitcham, Surrey and we all got a box of free burgers to take home
I’ve managed to round up 50+ of my old school mates who were also in the advert and if anyone can find it on YouTube, we’d LOVE to see it again!
Get in touch, http://RichKavanagh.com
Oh, LOVE this site by the way :))
Hi Rich, thanks for getting in touch, and glad you like the site. Always nice to hear from people who were in the adverts.
So, did you know the kid who sang like a choir boy and got flicked behind the ear?
I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the advert and if I come across I shall let you know!
i was in the school advert too!! burgers had defrosted by the time we got home….
Do you know who created this Birds eye advert?
Apart from the obvious answer, Birds Eye, then no, I’m sorry I don’t…
