While not as severe as those between the film and book versions of 2001 - 2010 does at least involve the same planet & moon ! Leonov's robot probe in the film is swapped for a manned Chinese mission, the film plays up the brewing international situation, remove's Floyd's marriage difficulties, changes the sex of the Leonov's doctor, changes the surname of the commander (she's married to one of the other crew in the book) and the book doesn't kill anyone !
