I think you're talking about Rolf On Saturday OK? which would have been on in the early to mid 70s. I certainly remember him doing the paintings you mention - this is where his "can you tell what it is yet?" catchphrase came from, because he'd always say it when you still didn't have a clue what it was going to be.

The kids in the audience were always from a different school as I remember, so I wrote Rolf a letter asking if he would choose my school. I think the series had ended by the time I sent in my letter, but I got a nice reply from his secretary and a brilliant signed photo of him which I still have tucked away somewhere. What made the signed photo so great was that Rolf had obviously signed it himself, because he had written by name on it in big cartoon letters, and it had a picture of a Rolfaroo on it too!

Would you also know what the name of his earlier TV show (late 60's or early 70's I think) in which he performed some amazing art, such as his giant screen paintings? For these he used a wide paintbrush, a large tin of black paint and an expanse of white canvas. Rolf would start with a dash of paint here, another dash there, and there and so on - apparantly at random. But after a while the whole painting would come together, almost like magic to us as young kids. It was truly amazing stuff to watch.

Regards.
