I called this my favourite film for years during my childhood - based just on seeing it once at the cinema as I never owned it on video! Hmm... It's on DVD, you say? Is it available in the Nexus of Sominus?

"Duck!" "And proud of it."

I think it probably got taped over by either The Simpsons or The X Files long ago, though you never know, I may still have it floating around.

If I don't have it I might be tempted to pick up the DVD.

I have very similar feelings about this film Rick. I haven't seen it for a while but now I think back about it there was quite a bit of stuff in there which perhaps wasn't exactly suitable material for children.

However, at the time I loved it. I had a copy taped off the TV and it got watched a fair few times, second only to my copy of Ghostbusters.

While the film was stupid beyond belief, it was also hysterically funny. Perhaps people slating it didn't take it for the escapist nonsense it was. I mean, it had everything - a "hero" well out of his comfort zone, crazy scientists, cute female sidekick, gizmos-galore, lots of explosions...
...I *loved* the "lawnmower" plane.

The only thing, looking back now (I dug out my old Beta copy (yes, I have a Betamax!) and watched it just the other week) is some of the gags are rather adult in nature. I guess it all went over my head when I was younger. But, well, what was the target audience? Who was this film supposed to be appealing to?

Go read up on the Howard the Duck comic. It's so important in many ways leading to a court battle between Steve Gerber - the writer/creator of the character - and Marvel comics, which led to the Destroyer Duck benefit book which was the first publication of Groo the Wanderer and then to the whole concept of Creator Owned Comics.

I see that the Essential Howard the Duck trade is out of print though :-(
