My Mum watched, so it was on when I was doing my homework or something. Personally I wouldn't want to live in Albert Square, or Emmerdale, or Coronation Street around Christmas time, as chances are I would end up run over, pregnant, divorced, bankrupt or murdered (and being a bloke that second one would be tricky to explain in the plot). I can't honestly say I have ever really watched it though as I was more interested in going out on my BMX with my mates than watching soaps. I suppose it might have had more appeal for people who lived in London. These days I don't even have a TV or licence as there is nothing much that I want to watch.
