I recently ran a competition to win a bag of the newly relaunched Galaxy Counters. Not the worlds biggest prize perhaps but a great many of you have got quite excited about this particular sweetie returning to shop shelves, and we had a great collection of entries.

I chose Nicky’s entry as it brought to mind similar memories of my own childhood (see my entry on penny sweets for more!). Here it is in her own words:-

Well said! The closest you generally get to this now is Pick ‘n’ Mix (taken over by Tesco, WH Smith and others now. RIP – Woolworths stores) which is the same sweets sold by weight, not quantity, which means you generally get far less for your money. Ten pence would probably get you one pink foam shrimp now if you were lucky.

Well, another year and indeed decade is nearly over, so as I take my customary Christmas break I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

It’s been a fun year for me, my first full year of being a parent, and I’m really looking forward to enjoying Christmas this year with my wife and daughter. Hopefully this year she’ll be old enough to realise that unwrapping presents is fun!

So with 2010 just around the corner, I have to ask, what will this new decade be called for short? After all, Eighties, Nineties and even Noughties are fairly obvious abbreviations, but the Tens doesn’t sound quite right, does it?

Well, I almost didn’t get this ready in time but a bit of last minute tinkering has managed to bring you the (drum roll please)…

Today is the first day of advent and if you were like me as a kid, then the month of December was made even more exciting by having the chance to open a little door on a piece of cardboard to reveal a picture of a star or some holly. Sounds lame, but it was one of the things I remember enjoying a lot as a child, so I bring you a new fangled modern approach, with a twist.

This advent calendar is different because you won’t find a candle or some mistletoe behind it’s doors, and you don’t even have to fiddle around opening the doors either. Each day a new image will be revealed of something Eighties related, which if you click on it will take you to the relevant page of this very site discussing whatever that picture might be.
